NRA Makes Major Investment in Alaska

(PALMER) – The National Rifle Association State Fund Committee for Alaska held its annual meeting this past weekend in Palmer to determine the disposition of over $150,000.00 in available grant funding.  Grants were given to high school shooting teams, 4-H Shooting Sports Programs, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, local gun clubs and the Food Bank of Alaska.

The money comes from the volunteer efforts of dedicated Alaskans throughout the State.  NRA members in communities from Ketchikan to Kotzebue get together once a year and hold a Friends of NRA banquet to raise money for the shooting sports, conservation and humanitarian projects.

This year’s funding amount of over $150,000.00 was made possible by the extraordinary effort of everyday Alaskans.  “2006 was my first full year as the Field Rep. for Alaska, and I was overwhelmed by the generosity and dedication of Alaskans to the Second Amendment, the shooting sports, and the outdoor heritage of this great land.” said Brad Kruger.

Aside from the usual dedication of funds to the ongoing shooting programs such 4-H Shooting Sports, and the Rabbit Creek Range Youth League, major funding was also provided to the ever popular Becoming an Outdoors Woman, the new Alaska Conservation Camp program for youth, the Boy Scouts and several Junior Olympic teams.  “I was really excited and energized by the breadth of giving the State Fund Committee undertook this year.” Kruger said.  “Not only did we fund shooting sports projects, we also supported groups such as the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage and the Food Bank of Alaska.”  “The Committee felt projects such as the Food Bank’s Hunters for the Hungry project exemplified who we are and what we do.”

This year’s SFC meeting was the first time where many of the different committee members from each community got together to discuss strategies, share fundraising ideas and of course parcel out the grant money.  Held at the Alaska State Elks Association Camp in Sutton, Alaska, members were treated to two days of honing their skills and having fun.  “This is a great group of Alaskans.” said Kruger.  “I can’t imagine anybody, anywhere being more dedicated to our State and our Nation than these men and women, it is a privilege to work with them.”
